Geographical Norway Vantaa Men’s Softshell Jacket – Review

Geographical Norway Vantaa Men's Softshell Jacket - Review

It has been quite a while since we have done a single jacket review, especially with our two latest segments of comparison reviews on jackets and brands.

Today we will take a look at a softshell, a high-performance one at that, by Geographical Norway.

As is the case with most of our single reviews, Vantaa, too, is a previously featured jacket in our selections.

We like to single out jackets this way because some of them are quite impressive and taking a more detailed look is helpful to those that are in the market for certain types of jackets, in this case, softshells.

So let’s get started right away.

* Note: The availability of the clothes (including colors and sizes) might change at any time. Also please check the clothes’ materials and features on the various shops before buying. We do our best to assure the accuracy of our articles, but sometimes they might contain errors. The product images shown are for illustration purposes only.

When To Wear It

Being a softshell jacket, Vantaa shares some similarities with other softshells. These include its performance, breathability and functionality.

For this reason, even the “when” of wearing it is the standard as with most softshells, which is for sports during late autumn and early to mid winter.

Because the design comes with logos, strips and contrasting colors, this is a typical sports softshell, not suitable for casual wear, like some other designs out there, so look out for that if you want an all-around jacket to wear.

It works great as a transitional jacket, too, but because it is a tad bit thicker than other softshells, it is not suitable for layering, unless it is the only option you have. You are better off with a fleece jacket for that.

Now, this jacket comes with a removable hood and a high collar, which has chin guard to protect your chin and neck from the main zipper. The hood is adjustable and fleece-lined on the inside, in order to keep the head warm and protected.

It has elasticized sleeve cuffs and a standard hem, in a standard-slim fit, so it fits great on men with broader shoulders and narrow middle section.

It is a jacket that comes with several pockets on the outside and inside, giving you quite some room for storage and fleece-lined side pockets for the hands.

Having all grounds covered and with a focus on safety, on the shoulders, sleeves and back you will find several reflective strips which will keep you safe in bad weather and in bad lighting.

Material

Made of 96% Polyester and 4% Spandex on the outside, Vantaa is an adaptable jacket that allows plenty of freedom and comfort during movement.

It is made with Turbo Dry technology, which gives the jacket its high breathability and helps wick moisture way from the body. Apart from that, this is a water-resistant jacket, with a water column of 3000mm and wind-resistant as well.

The inside is lined with soft, 100% Polyester fleece, which helps provide insulation. The insulation makes it easier for the jacket to maintain the body warmth at a comfortable level, while preventing overheating due to the shell being so breathable.

This is a jacket best worn in dry and cool weather, but it fares well should you be caught in sudden rain.

Color Selection

Geographical Norway overall does not provide many color options, but it does like to offer designs with contrasting outer / inner combinations.

This is the case for Vantaa, which has a Black shell with reflective details and a Neon green inner fleece lining that really catches the eye.

User Reviews, Feedback & Opinions

The overall consensus for Vantaa is that it delivers what it promises, especially for the price.

Weather-resistance is on par with its claims, it fares well in light showers but would ideally be worn in dry weather. It is, however, more on the warmer side as compared to some other softshells, so it is suitable for winter wear, too, especially if you will be quite physically active.

Its breathability is what you would expect, but because the material is a little thicker, in warmer weather there might be some issues in this regard, so save this jacket for late autumn.

The most important aspect of a sotshell is without a doubt its functionality and performance. Vantaa, having a stiffer and slightly thicker shell, is not as adaptable to movement as a typical softshell.

This is not an issue overall, since it has quite a bit of elastic in the fabric, but if you are looking for a highly functional jacket that you can use in very challenging sports, then look elsewhere.

The quality is pretty good, too, according to reviewers, they are happy with the product they received and it fully met their expectations.

The major downside is the cut. Being more on the slimmer side, it tends to run small, especially at the sleeves, especially if you are a muscular guy, so be extra attentive when looking at the sizing table.

Conclusion

Vantaa is a quality softshell that is best suited for lower temperatures and dry weather, as it is slightly warmer and thicker than a classic softshell.

It is well-made, fits comfortably and it is affordable, so if that’s what you are looking for, then it would be a good choice.
