Arc’teryx vs Mammut: Which Brand is Better?

Arc'teryx vs Mammut: Which Brand is Better?

We are back with our “Which Brand is Better” series. After comparing the Canadian brand Arc’teryx with many other brands such as Canada Goose and Marmot, today in this article we will compare it with a Switzerland-based brand, Mammut.

Both have a wide range of high-quality products that are perfect in their own way.

Arc’teryx and Mammut have been entertaining customers across the globe for many years now and have cemented their position in the outdoor clothing industry.

In the following comparison we’ll put these two brands against each other and help you make the right choice depending on what you’re looking for.

So, let’s begin!

Contents:

1. Mammut

A short history of the brand

Standing as one of the leading brand names in the outdoor clothing industry today, Mammut had its humble beginnings in 1862 when Kaspar Tanner opened his ropeworks. Only a few decades later, the rope-manufacturing company transformed into a global clothing giant.

Even after 150 years of its incorporation, the company still manufactures ropes, although it now uses complex techniques for its production, which brings a considerable amount of revenue to the company.

Today, Mammut’s product range comprises backpacks, jackets, rain jackets, fleece jackets, softshell pants, and rain pants. The mantra of the company is sustainability. It chooses the best quality materials to manufacture its products, both apparel and ropes.

Materials and Manufacture

Mammut’s product range is now following the Bluesign® standard. The company is also cautious about employing environment-friendly production techniques.

For this, it has started the initiative of collecting and recycling disused outdoor equipment. It is also working actively for the substitution of PFCs (perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals).

When it comes to outdoor clothing, animals’ fur is often used to make the products. However, the company doesn’t endorse or engage in animal cruelty. It has adopted techniques that are not harmful to animals. The company also ensures that the animals are not force-fed and that there is no live plucking.

This way, the company is treading on the path of ensuring a value-oriented growth.

For rope production, the company uses carbon-neutral materials. Its clothing is quality-assured and in compliance with the criteria set by the Fair Wear Foundation.

In some of their products they use “Gore-Tex”, which as you probably know, is one of the best waterproof fabric technologies available.

In the video below you can see a presentation of Mammut’s Eiger Extreme Collection that uses Gore-Tex:

Price

Mammut’s products come in a varying price range, with both buyer-friendly options and more expensive ones, with average jackets’ costs of about $100-$300.

As for their expensive products, their more technical designs have a price that goes as high as $400 and above.

Are their jackets worth the price?

Keeping in mind the quality of the materials and the high technology used to manufacture these jackets, it is understandable why these products are available at high prices.

Also, this brand has been in the industry for more than 150 years and has created a good name and reputation with its high-quality products.

So, in our opinion, these jackets are absolutely worth their price.

2. Arc’teryx

A short history of the brand

A group of mountain climbers founded a company called “Rock Solid” in 1989. Dave Lane, one of the founders of the company and a passionate mountain climber, would not have thought that his small company would have been renamed to Arc’teryx in 1991.

This was done because of its amazing performance in a short period of time and its resolve to redefine the world of outdoor clothing and gear.

So, in 1991 Arc’teryx was born in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and its name refers to one of the earliest known birds, the Archaeopteryx.

This bird is proof of evolution and the brand’s philosophy is in line with evolution’s constant change and adaptation. Arc’teryx exhibits this philosophy in their high quality and innovative products, making them some of the most recommended products online.

In the beginning the brand started out with gear for climbing and now it is one of the leading outdoor clothing brands with a wide range of products catering to the individual needs and preferences of its large customer base.

Two of its most popular products are the Vapor harness and the Bora backpack, while for its technical wear, Arc’teryx found its success from the collaboration and the use of Gore-Tex fabrics.

Materials and Manufacture

When we talk about luxury products, we cannot turn a blind eye to the environmental damage which is caused by some manufacturing companies, as many of them dispose of their waste without much thought.

Arc’teryx, however, is one of the brands that have certain standards and ideals. It sources its raw materials for animal-based products from suppliers that treat animals humanely.

When it comes to outsourcing its manufacturing work, Arc’teryx works with entities that comply with strict labor laws and where workers are treated fairly.

The company’s commitment to quality lies in its raw materials, which are known to stand the test of time, and the durability of their products is considerable.

Customers who buy Arc’teryx products can also use their quality after-sales services.

When it comes to technologies, the brand has developed its own AC2 technology, mainly for their backpacks, whereas for their jackets and other clothing, as we said above, they use Gore-Tex fabrics.

Popular designs

Let’s now look at two jacket designs by Arc’teryx, like we did above for Mammut.

This combination gives the jacket moisture wicking properties and stretchability for comfortable movement.

There is a full front zipper with chin guard and two hand pockets with laminated zippers.

For women we have selected the Squamish Hoody, a 100% nylon jacket with DWR treatment. It is very light and compressible and comes with wind-resistant fabric to give you maximum protection during chilly weather.

There is a StormHood™ helmet-compatible hood, a chest stow pocket, Velcro cuffs and the jacket is very breathable.

Price

Arc’teryx too, has many expensive products and jackets. This is because of the quality of their materials and the craftsmanship, as we have explained here. But they also have some affordable options.

Their average jackets’ prices are around $200-$300 with their most expensive options reaching over $700.

Are their jackets worth the price?

In our opinion the money spent on these products is worth it. This is because the quality and performance is very high and their life cycle is remarkable.

3. Which Brand is Better?

In many ways, both brands are prestigious as they use premium materials to manufacture their products. Also, both use ethical and environmental-friendly means of production.

However, Mammut seems more specialized when it comes to climbing ropes. We think that no one can beat a company which has been manufacturing ropes for more than 150 years.

So, at the end it all depends on what type of clothing or, in particular, what type of jacket you are looking for and for what type of activity or sport.

But if we were forced to choose, this time we’d say “Mammut”. We’re liking very much this Swiss brand (maybe because it’s from Europe, just like us).

Also, its design style, its products’ durability and its extensive consideration of the environment has really caught our attention.

That’s all for today. See you in the next comparison!
