1. Parajumpers

A short history of the brand

A modern brand established in 2005, Parajumpers design impressive outerwear that are not solely limited to being functional. Their designs are fashionable and the brand’s founding is as impressive as their design philosophy.

It was an accident meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, between the brand’s designer – Massimo Rossetti – and a member of 210th Rescue Squadron.

The 210th Rescue Squadron is comprised of jumping parachutists, which is where the name Parajumpers comes from.

They are a military section, highly trained and qualified, whose job is to intervene in difficult operations in order to save the lives of those entrapped up high in the mountains or in the depths of the sea.

Inspired by their work, Massimo Rossetti set out to design highly functional jackets, made of durable nylon and able to withstand the harshest of conditions, working as an aide rather than just another jacket.

Like Massimo, we are also impressed with the reputation the brand has built for itself and the functionality of their designs, some of which we will feature in this comparison.

Materials and Manufacture

As we briefly mentioned above, Parajumpers use hard-wearing nylon, which is a highly durable fabric that lasts for a very long time and is resistant to wear and tear.

The fabrics used by the brand are sourced from the Far East, namely countries such as China, Korea, and Japan. Italy is also an important country where the brand resides and also sources part of its materials.

All of the fabrics, accessories, and other materials used are tested per the R.E.A.C.H Regulation, which ensures the lack of harmful chemicals and substances.

Renowned not just for the functionality of their designs, but also for the comfort of their down parkas and coats, Parajumpers use high quality down to provide the best insulation for those looking for warm parkas that are not as bulky as what is often available.

What is interesting about some of the brand’s designs is the use of down-filled lining as opposed to using down insulation as it is typically used in regular jackets. This down lining can be removed, making the parka suitable to wear in milder weather, too.

On to the fur trim which can be found in a number of the winter parkas, they use different types of fur. The Finn raccoon fur is sourced from Finland and guaranteed to meet the highest EU regulations on fur farming.

From North America, they source the Coyote fur and lastly, the rabbit and sheep fur are sourced from animals that are by-products of the food industry in the case of rabbits, and from multi-purpose sheep in the case of sheep fur (here is their fur and down policy).

The skins from these animals are not tanned with whale or other cetacean oils, and meet the necessary standards that guarantee the humane treatment of the animals during their lives.

Another thing that bears mentioning is the brand’s alternative options to their real fur products, which are made of synthetic materials, making them suitable for those who do not prefer buying animal-based products.

The designing process is based in Italy, whereas the manufacturing of the products is done in the Far East, with some special collections made in Europe or India. All of the facilities are tightly regulated and regularly controlled for their quality of production and ethical treatment of workers.

Price

Parajumpers is not a cheap brand by any means. Its products can vary anywhere from $300 to $1000, making it a good match in price for Canada Goose.

However, the quality of their products would explain such a high price, especially considering the manufacturing and materials used to make their jackets and parkas.

Are these jackets worth their price?

Considering that their jackets are made of high-quality materials and are as functional as advertised, to some they might be worth their price.

However the warmth that some of their expensive designs provide is not the highest, which can make it an issue for those looking to buy extremely warm parkas.

2. Canada Goose

A short history of the brand

Established in Canada, in 1957, Canada Goose is one of the most popular brands across the globe.

So popular in fact that has become a bit of a trend to own a Canada Goose jacket in major cities, where the temperatures during winter drop extensively.

The brand makes some of the best and warmest parkas available, with their Expedition design being arguably the warmest parka you will find.

A brand endorsed by celebrities and by those who love down parkas, Canada Goose continues to be a staple in many people’s winter wardrobes, despite its prices.

Materials and Manufacture

Relying primarily on Polyester and Nylon for their shells and linings in the jackets, Canada Goose is mostly renowned for the high quality of the down used to insulate their jackets.

Sourced per the RDS certification, their goose and duck down is of very high quality and provides great warmth, albeit sometimes at the expense of functionality due to the bulk of some of the brand’s designs.

Their down is certified as being responsibly sourced and fully traceable, from farmers that raise waterfowl for the meat industry and treat them humanely, without live-plucking or force-feeding them.

When it comes to the fur trim that can be found in a lot of the brand’s designs, it is genuine Coyote fur, which helps protect the face from snow blizzards and from the cold.

The ethical issues it has raised have resonated with the brand and they are now moving away from using real coyote fur in most of their modern designs.

The manufacturing process is meticulously controlled through a 13-step process, which guarantees that every little detail is perfect.

Canada Goose parkas and jackets are made in Canada and have, for years now, held the reputation of being some of the most long-lasting products, with some designs said to be decades old and still looking as good as new.

It comes with wrist gaiters, which have thumb holes in them, providing better protection against the cold. There is brushed tricot at the back of the collar, which provides warmth and comfort.

To further keep the cold out, there is Windguard under the central zipper, which prevents cold drafts from passing through. There are hand pockets on this design, with zipper closures, and an inner pocket, too.

Price

Those who know Canada Goose know the brand’s prices are not for everyone. With designs that retail at an average of $600, depending on where you are looking to buy them, their jackets often raise the question of whether it is worth to purchase them or not.

Are their jackets worth the price?

Quality and warmth are what Canada Goose parkas and jackets are renowned for and their performance more than justifies the price.

But, if you don’t live in an area where it’s necessary to go so heavy on the insulation, then it’s best to look at some lighter and more affordable options, in our opinion.

If you want to learn more, we have an in-depth article on this topic: Why is Canada Goose so Expensive? Are their Jackets Worth the Price?

3. Which Brand is Better?

couple wearing parka jackets in snowy forest

All things considered, Canada Goose provides better protection against the cold. Therefore, if you are looking for a jacket that can withstand arctic temperatures, this is the brand to turn to when the time comes.

On the other hand, if it’s functionality that you are interested in, a jacket by Parajumpers will be your best bet. They are designed to be comfortable and stylish, suitable for a variety of outdoor activities, and also provide better protection against wet conditions.

Canada Goose jackets are a bit lacking when it comes to rain protection, which is why they are better suited for cold and dry conditions.

Price-wise, Parajumpers is more affordable than Canada Goose, and also provides a wider variety of price options.

Therefore, once again, it all comes down to what you are looking for in a jacket. Based on that, the answer to which of these two brands is better for you, will depend.

  1. Sorry, don’t agree. Having purchased a very expensive Canada Goose I was very disappointed by its warmth and insulation.Eventually I took the jacket back to the store for a refund. I later purchased another quality brand that was much warmer. I’ve heard that Canada Goose may be cutting back on the amount of down used in some of their jackets.Don’t know if this is true but not impressed by the model I purchased.

      • I have the Canada Goose Shelburne parka and i absolutely love it. Its simple and so warm. Have never been cold while wearing it. I actually work in a retail store that sells both, CG and PJs and before purchasing the Shelburne parka I contemplated for a long time which one to go for (the PJs model i was thinking about was Long Bear down parka) and what was the biggest factor for me was the weight. The Long Bear down jacket was extremely heavy and the Shelburne was so light compared to that so I went for Canada Goose. Never regretted my decision. Thumbs up for CG.

      • Yikes never had a CG but I have a pjs right hand and can say they’re very warm and perfect for uk winters

  2. I think both are good. Parajumpers is great but Canada Goose pay workers more because production in non Asian countries, In East Europe, Asia, Turkey workers are paid much less. Because of that I vote for Canada Goose and because have nicest model optimized for regular people. Moncler is too much for VIP example, Parajumpers is military style, but if I want something like that I would look for Cockpit USA rather. They produce in USA and on models you see that it’s more time worked on every jacket. Simply clothes produce in USA have something specific, I can’t explain but it’s immediately recognizable if you pay attention on details. There is at least 20 brands with similar price but… I don’t know Resolute Parka for Extreme Cold, Skarslet Parka for activities on snow and Hybrid Lite Jacket from Canada Goose is everything I need in closet… I could live only with them. Maybe Chillwack Bomber for every day in town etc…I don’t want to pay same price for Moncler who produce jacket in Georgia same as other brand who produce in Canada and maybe same workers work decades in factory. Because they are payed double per hour or more then in Asia or East Europe. Moose Knuckles arrive on our market(Serbia) I almost cried because it’s not Canada Goose. They have best models for regular people who want quality and tradition. I saw at least 5 nice Parka jackets but always back on Canada Goose. Only most people wear one size bigger parka. I could imagine only resolute Parka properly to fit, georgus jacket. Expedition as well.
